HP Printer 79 Service error: Solution

How to resolve the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw printer error 79 Service error Turn off then on.

The HP knowledgebase provides some sensible steps, and visit support.hp.com as I won’t copy all the detail out here. But to summarise these steps are Turn off the printer for 30 seconds and try again, plug your printer in without using a surge protector, and unplug cables before turning it off and on again.

Turn it on and off again

None of this was working for me, but what did fix it was to do a full reset. On this printer you can do this as follows:

  1. Turn off the printer using the power button on the front.
  2. Turn the printer back on
  3. When the energy logo appears, press (and hold) on the lower right hand corner of the display until the words “permanent storage init” appear on the screen.
  4. Wait for the printer to finish starting

Results may vary, but this worked for me.
